Bringing Maggie Home by Kim Vogel Sawyer



Bringing Maggie Home is the latest novel from Kim Vogel Sawyer. I have read several of her books and this one ranks as one of her best books yet.

Ten-year-old Hazel DeFord was picking blackberries with her 3 year old sister, Maggie, in 1943. She momentarily turned away from her sister and Maggie disappeared. Despite searching for many hours, no one found little Maggie. Years later, Hazel is haunted by guilt and anxiety from that awful incident. Her parents told her never  to talk about her sister again, so she didn't. Hazel married and raised a daughter, Margaret Diane. Her daughter has a daughter named Meghan. Meghan is in an traffic accident that forces her to take a 6 week leave of absence from her job and 3 generations of women find themselves all together. Together they uncover Hazel's secret. But can they solve this family mystery and find out what happened to Maggie?

I genuinely enjoyed Bringing Maggie Home. Sawyer writes beautiful prose that keeps the reader turning pages as quickly as they can. The whole story was beautiful. I don't want to give any spoilers so am limiting my description of the plot, but there is a lot going on in this book. As a Christian reader, I enjoyed so many aspects of this book. Sawyer shares the character's faith and growth in ways that are realistic, heartwarming and encouraging to the reader. She also wrote a fascinating book with a mystery plot that I didn't readily figure out. It kept me wanting more with every page until the end. I would highly recommend Bringing Maggie Home.

5-Minute Bedtime Treasury by Hannah C. Hall Illustrated by Steve Whitlow

The 5-Minute Bedtime Treasury by Hannah C. Hall is a beautifully illustrated children's book with some fun rhyming stories inside it. Measuring roughly 8 1/4 inches square it is a fun size to read in bed together. This story book is aimed at pre-school children up to age 4. There is one story that talks about going to school so kindergarten children may enjoy it as well. There are six stories in the 5-Minute Bedtime Treasury.  God Bless You and Good Night God Bless My Friends God Bless My School God Bless My Family God Bless My Home All of these stories are illustrated by Steve Whitlow with what I would call softly-vibrant pictures. The pictures look soft and warm and yet are vibrant in color. I think they are just gorgeous and well liked by children.
